HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST HYDROSEEDING UNIT and SUPPLIES FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Not all Hydroseeding businesses are the same. Some cater to the home landscaping market, some to the landscaping of large developments or recreational facilities and some are designed to handle major erosion control projects.

At Easy Lawn we build a full line of jet units and a full line of paddle-agitated units and carry both wood and paper mulch. Since we do not believe in the “One size fits all” philosophy we can offer an impartial opinion of what will best suit your needs.

1. Should I use wood or paper mulch or a 50/50 blend?
2. Will I sprig or spray?
3. Do I need Jet agitation or paddle agitation?
4. Should I use liquid, granular or soluble fertilizer?
5. Will my staff be trained or untrained?
6. How can I determine the best value for my money?

1. Should I use wood or paper mulch or a 50/50 blend?

Paper was the original product used for hydroseeding but as the industry grew, wood was developed for highway and large erosion control projects where water was scarce or it was not the ideal growing season. Our fact sheet WOOD VS PAPER will provide you with the pros and cons of each type of mulch including cost and value analysis. Pelleted mulch is the most convenient as you don’t have to break it up – just put it in the tank. 50/50 blends provide an alternative when you want the ease of paper the need the erosion control provided by wood.

2. Will I sprig or spray?

  • Spraying is the usual method of application for standard grasses and any of the Easy Lawn Series units can be used depending on the type of mulch and size of the job.

  • SPRIGGING is the alternative to seeding. If you plan to sprig we recommend the CONTRACTOR SERIES. Sprigging will require the addition of a gear pump.

3. Do I need Jet or Paddle Agitation?

  • Jet agitation is available with the the TURFMASTER SERIES and LANDSCAPER SERIES units and is most efficient when using paper, 50/50 blend or pelleted mulch. It is also noted for requiring extremely low maintenance. The Easy Lawn agitation system recirculates 200 plus gallons per minute back into the tank at all times ensuring a well mixed slurry, while maintaining 50% more spray pressure than competitive models, with their agitation system off! The L 90 and L 120 have a top agitation jet just under the grinder that immediately wets down the mulch and incorporates it into the slurry.

  • Easy Lawn manufactures the only jet agitation system that can mix paper and wood mulch, with the working capacity of the mechanical unit, however on the much larger jobs where 100 % wood or bonded fiber matrix or sprigs are being used paddle agitation is much better for mixing. The CONTRACTOR SERIES paddle agitation system is more aggressive than other models, making it easier to mix thick slurries, and has a low maintenance requirement comparable to our jet agitation machines.

4. Should I use liquid, granular or soluble fertilizer? What should I look for in a fertilizer?

  • Providing a source of nutrients to newly emerging grass seedlings is a key component to successful establishment of Turf.
  • Liquid fertilizer, while very effective for immediate growth is very expensive and impractical when hydroseeding larger areas.
  • Soluble fertilizers are not bound to the soil and can be taken up and utilized by the plant immediately plant immediately.
  • Granular Fertilizer as the name implies is fertilizer in solid form with the grains varying from sand size crystals to larger pebble size lumps. Granular style fertilizers are available over the counter, often very cheaply, but what most consumers don ’t realize it s that it can take up to six weeks to become effective and that it is corrosive to steel tanks. Many companies coat their steel tanks but pits from the abrasive action during mixing and rust from the corrosive phosphoric acid in fertilizer quickly show up. Another problem with granular fertilizer is that uninformed consumers believe the grains of fertilizer dissolve in water, like sugar, and don’t realize they have to be broken down by bacteria, which can take several weeks.
  • Combinations. Many contractors will combine a soluble fertilizer with a granular fertilizer and the paddle agitation system of the CONTRACTOR SERIES keeps granular solids in suspension and the STAINLESS STEEL TANKS guard against the corrosive aspect of granular fertilizers.
Especially in hydroseeding the grass needs immediate access to nutrients. Soil with a low potassium level will result in weak seedling and will inhibit other nutrients from doing their job. Lack of phosphorus in the soil prevents grasses from greening up properly in the spring and encourages the growth of weeds. Sufficient nitrogen immediately and over time is also essential for all plants. Balanced growth depends on a fertilizer having as much potash as nitrogen and on the fertilizer providing immediate and long term nutrients to the emerging grass. HYDROLIZER is the first premium hydroseeding fertilizer specially formulated for the unique requirements of hydroseeding.

5. Will my staff be trained or untrained?

The TURFMASTER and LANDSCAPER units are so easy to use that basically no training is required. If you hire temporary labor or have a high workforce turnover you don ’t want to invest a lot of time in training. The CONTRACTOR units do require training your workforce, as do any mechanical hydroseeding units. All Easy lawn dealers and salesman are trained in the use of all the units and will provide demo training when your unit is delivered. We also provide technical assistance by phone and e mail.

6. How can I determine the best value for my money?

While the size and type of job you do will be a big factor in the model you choose, we have tried to make it easy for you to determine where to get the most for your money. The TURFMASTER ESTIMATED PROFIT SHEET and the LANDSCAPER ESTIMATED PROFIT SHEET give an excellent analysis of expected profits.
Most people who start out with a small unit find that with the increase in speed and profits that an Easy Lawn unit provides, they quickly want to move up to a larger unit. This often requires trading in or selling the smaller unit. Used competitive units that are made out of steel and have 9 – 22 service points leave the potential buyer with too many questions- how much tank life is left? Did the last owner perform all that maintenance? Why is he replacing a paddle unit for another paddle unit? With Easy lawn, if you are buying a 600 Gal or smaller unit to start with, you can almost look at that as a deposit on your next, larger unit. Because of the low maintenance, and with a new impeller and volute, a used unit can perform like a new unit, and they tend to be grabbed up very quickly when put on sale.

Easy Lawn salesmen know their product and sell it with pride. Your questions will be answered quickly and truthfully. Since we have such a large range of jet and mechanical units to fit all needs we can give you an unbiased opinion of what unit is most suited for your business. A demonstration video is available on the Turfmaster units and field demos can be arranged for all models.
